It seems making your own bath bombs is the latest craze.

After years of watching beauty bloggers tint their bath water into rainbow colours with their predominantly Lush bath bombs, I suppose this was the natural next step.

It’s extremely easy to make and if I can make it, anyone can. Trust me on this one.

What you'll need to make bath bombs

You will need

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup Epsom salts
  • 1-2 tsp. water
  • 3-4 tsp. coconut oil
  • 1 tsp. essential oil
  • food colouring
  • bowls
  • whisk
  • Cute molds

In a bowl mix the dry ingredients together with a whisk. Add the water and whisk. Add in the coconut oil and whisk again. At this point I divided the mixture into three ramekins. I did this because I wanted to make bath bombs with layered colours.

Add the food colouring into the mixtures, the amount will differ depending on how intense you want the colours to be. You can now add in the essential oil – a little goes a long way. I used lavender oil for a relaxing bath and peppermint oil for an energising one.

Whisk your bath bomb mixture so that it is wet enough to stick together in clumps.

Scoop the mixture into your molds. You can use any mold that you fancy. I prefer silicone ones because it’s easier to get the bath bombs out once they are dry. Put the bath bomb mixture in little bit at a time and press it in firmly until you have filled your mold. You can use your fingers, the back of a spoon, or like me, the bottom of a wine stopper to compress the mixture. ‘

Leave the bath bombs in the molds for 24 hours to dry, then carefully take it out.

You are now ready to have a long relaxing, great-smelling bath.

Note: add in liquids slowly. The mixture will react and you don’t want it to fizz all out while you’re making it.
